A visit to Preston and Steve's Studio

So, I didn’t attend Preston & Steve’s new studio opening party. However, our 3 Principals were invited to go, and check out the new digs we would be showing off in the launch of Preston & Steve’s fresh website, hitting the internet mid-summer. However, I could tell you how it pretty much panned out, without even turning to my crystal ball…

Leo, the music geek he is, was completely in awe of the new studio, in all its large-console-mixing glory. They most-likely needed 3 or 4 armed guards watching him, making sure he didn’t start touching all of the equipment, basically making every attempt to produce the show himself. (He’d move into a music studio if someone would let him.)

Anthony is the king of taking advantage of a social/networking scene. I have no doubt that the Preston & Steve party was any different. Before you’ve had time to check your coat, he has already met 7 people and learned their life stories, knows which food trays to send you to first, and has taken the liberty to get both you and himself something from the mini-bar.

Steve, probably the biggest fan of the show out of my 3 bosses, has been to their old studio a couple of times to discuss the new web site. Always up for a decent party and meeting new people, he, no doubt, still had work in the back of his mind. (Steve is one of those anomalies that can teach himself the latest computer program overnight, while downing a few Guinness’s, and still manage to hold a hilarious (yet pointless) conversation about the latest gem of a YouTube video released on the web.)

From what I hear, a great time had by all. Thanks to Preston and Steve, and their whole crew for having us. Next time, I’m sneaking in through the back door- screw the guards…

A Little Elbow Room

From one end of the town to the other, West Chester has extraordinary charm about it. The historic architecture makes virtually every office space an art studio’s dream. To top it off, no matter where your office is, you are walking distance to good beer, great food and even better shopping.

However… Now, don’t get me wrong, I adore everyone that I work with. We have a great time; someone is always saying or doing something that will, inevitably, get them made fun of. There are a lot of common interests, and boredom is a nonentity. That said, our last office was not the largest of spaces. Now, granted, the Principals had only recently gotten started, and could not have foreseen how quickly we’d grow. For the beginning months, after the first new hires and a few interns joined the team, it was close quarters. Basically, throwing a football around the room often ended in someone getting hit (me), because the guys thought it’d be fun to play monkey in the middle in our walk-in-closet–sized “main room.”

The first week of 2008 found slamm moving into a spacious new office, on the third floor of the Chester County Historical Society. Now, not only do the Principals each have their own office, but the designers’ space allows breaks for intense football throwing, um, I mean brainstorming. As with any move, there’s bound to be some growing pains and adjustments, but it’s really all been up hill for us. We have more space to work, to design, to play. The community that works within the Historical Society has taken every step to make us feel welcome, and we can’t thank them enough. Now, if only I could just get Dunkin Doughnuts to deliver here…

Back from Vegas

We just returned from CES 2008 in Vegas and while we had a great time, as we always do, there wasn’t anything that struck us as truly groundbreaking, There were absolutely things that were impressive, but overall things were brighter and bigger. It didn’t strike us in the same way that it has in past years. Maybe I was just in a different frame of mind but even the booth design and presentations seemed slightly “re-done”.

We definitely hope that next year has more to offer and we plan on having a presence at the show in 2009 (at least something like we did in 2007). Even though the technology wasn’t the best this year, it was great to get away. For some of the Slamm team it was their first trip to CES (and some to Vegas period). We met some good people and got to see a few friends... Looking forward to a lot of exciting work in 2009!
